Whenever I close my laptop, pack my digital camera into my bag, and travel across the country, I am always searching for places that have that special “something”—an unconventional style, a soul, and a history written into old walls. This week, my eyes landed on the map of West Pomerania. While most of my friends choose trendy, crowded resorts for their weekend getaways, I decided to step off the train in a place that completely caught me off guard. Girls, if you are looking for the perfect backdrop for atmospheric photos and want to feel the thrill of historical mystery, the town of Wałcz absolutely needs to be on your list.
Forget about boring, date-heavy guidebooks for a moment. I walked through the local streets and put together a totally subjective, stylish review of the places you simply have to see.
Gothic, Neo-Gothic, and Red Brick That Has Real Class
The first thing that catches your eye when you enter the town center is the incredible architectural mix. If you, like me, adore monumental, raw buildings, your camera will go crazy at the Church of St. Nicholas. This massive, Neo-Gothic red-brick temple beautifully dominates the town skyline. Standing at its base and looking up at the soaring tower gives you an incredible sense of respect for the builders of the past.
Just a short walk away, another gem awaits—the Classicist Former Jesuit College. This place possesses an incredibly elegant, academic atmosphere. Walking around these historic structures, it is easy to picture the students and professors of past centuries roaming these exact same corridors. Red brick is definitely the signature color of this town.
The Suspension Bridge: A Walk with a Magical View
When you feel like escaping the town’s hustle and bustle for a moment (yes, I look for personal downtime even in smaller towns!), make sure to head toward Lake Raduń. This is where you will find an absolute icon of Wałcz—the suspension bridge spanning across the lake.
This is no ordinary concrete structure. This wooden bridge, stretched over the water, has such a photogenic, nostalgic vibe that I spent a good hour there just staring at the water and taking photos. The bridge connects the town to forested areas where legendary, pre-war defensive fortifications are hidden. It is the perfect spot for a walk, deep thoughts, and taking a breath of fresh air away from your computer screen.
For those of you who love a dash of mystery and a bit of a thrill alongside beautiful architecture, Wałcz has an ace up its sleeve. The surrounding forests conceal the fortifications of the Pomeranian Wall, including a famous fortified group known as the Brickworks.
Looking at these massive concrete bunkers, which are slowly being reclaimed by moss, leaves a powerful impression. Nature is literally taking back what humans once built for warfare. It is an incredible lesson in humility and a place with an atmosphere so thick it sends chills down your spine. If you decide to go, remember to wear comfortable shoes—the high heels from the latest fashion lines definitely need to stay behind at the hotel!
Wałcz proved to me that the most wonderful treasures are often hidden right next to us; you just have to step off the beaten path. This town has a sense of pride, an extraordinary calmness, and architecture that blends perfectly with the surrounding nature. Pack your cameras, buy a ticket, and go discover these hidden corners before everyone else finds out about them.
